Clay or Composite?

When entering the market for poker chips the first thing you will notice is the huge variety and options to choose from. Poker chips come in all sorts of styles, colors, designs and composition. When speaking of composition, the most popular are clay poker chips and composite. Choosing between the two may seem difficult, but depending on your wants and need it can be quite simple. Lets take a look at what each of these two poker chips have to offer in order to make the decision a little easier on you.

Lets start by talking about clay poker chips. First, clay poker chips tend to be a bit more expensive than composite, sometimes exceeding the $1.50 mark. Casino’s use clay poker chips in their game rooms, so if replicating a casino poker chip is important to you then you should go with clay. Clay chips unarguably give you the best sound and feel. When you pick up a clay poker chip you will probably be hooked forever, composite chips, while very close, just can’t match the sound of a full clay poker chip. One down side of a clay poker chip is that they become worn a little faster than composite resin poker chips. Since they are made by molded clay, water and handling tend to wear down the clay composition. This may need to be taken into consideration when picking your poker chips. To me though, the positives of a clay poker chip greatly outweigh the negatives.

Composite resin poker chips are typically very economical. You can create your own poker chip set at a fairly low cost. Composite chips usually incorporate a metal insert to help them achieve a greater weight while clay chips do not. Composite chips have a more of a plastic feel, but their sound is their best feature. While not quite as good as a clay chip they are very impressive. Another positive of a composite chip is the huge selection. It seems as though it is easier to create more designs and colors using composite resin. This makes your options just about un-ending. Some of the most popular composite poker chips are the 11.5 gram Striped Dice chip and the 11.5 gram Suited chip. They are so popular due to their great quality, feel, sound and price.

So, when considering a poker chip you want to think about what you want and need out of your poker chips. Do you want the genuine feel and sound of a casino poker chip, which you get from full clay poker chips. Or do you want an economical chip with many different options? The choices seem daunting, but once you decide on what you want then it makes it a bit easier.
